Bringing History To Life!

Our current programme of lectures is proving as popular as ever.

Our February lecture was especially lively when Janet Bradshaw portrayed the lives of ordinary people over the centuries.  We've received numerous comments from those who attended.  Without exception everyone said how much they enjoyed her unusual presentation.

Janet's witty talk was illustrated "on the hoof" as she did quick costume changes.  Starting as a medieval village gossip and progressing through the centuries she ended up dressed as a land-girl during the 1940s.

Janet's day job is a history interpreter at Tatton Park where she plays character roles in front of parties of primary school children.  She brought to mind the wonderful monologues of Joyce Grenfell as she not only told a tale of history but included lots of funny anecdotes of comments her audiences of children come up with.

This was history told with a light touch by an immensely talented woman - a breathless, fast-moving and very lively evening's entertainment which was whole-heartedly appreciated by a packed audience of almost 200.  Great stuff!

The Society's latest publication

The talk by our Patron, Lord Ashbrook, about the Arley estate was one of the highlights of our 20th anniversary season. It has now been reproduced as an attractive booklet, illustrated in colour throughout.

This booklet can be ordered using the form on our Publication page or bought from the bookstall at one of our meetings.

Competitions

The "Picturing the Past" art competition, organised by Northwich & District Heritage Society in partnership with Vale Royal Borough Council was held in Summer 2006. Amateur artists presented pictures with local heritage as their subject matter, using 2D media. See the prize-winning entries here.

A recent Photographic Competition organised by Northwich & District Heritage Society attracted a large number of entries.
Prizes were sponsored by the Society as well as the Northwich Guardian and Vale Royal Borough Council.
Geoff Noxon won the two main prizes and Highly Commended awards were presented to Peter Smith and Vera Spain.

The prizes were presented at a ceremony at the Salt Museum, London Road, Northwich.
Prize winner Geoff Noxon is chairman of Northwich Photographic Society and he comments about his entries: "I took the photograph of Meller Braggins frontage from street level which resulted in the extreme convergence of verticals which I subsequently corrected on my computer. My other winning entry "The Blue Cap Memorial" - which is a listed monument - was taken with a  12-24mm lens from the top of a ladder."
